Pennsylvania Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf


This page is a summary of the ASL-English Interpreter requirements in PA, and the general process of obtaining a national certification from the Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf.

obtaining your cdi certification:


  1. Develop knowledge and skills for Certified Deaf Interpreting (not required, but strongly recommended).
    • Take trainings about Certified Deaf interpreting (see resources below).
    • Become familiar with RID's Code of Professional Conduct (CPC).
    • Learn about interpreting theory and practice models.
    • Identify and develop necessary interpreting competencies.
    • Learn and practice working with interpreting teams.
  2. Become a member of RID so you can register for CASLI certification exams.
    • Submit your audiogram so you qualify for the CDI exams.
    • Once your qualify for testing, register for CASLI's Generalist Knowledge Exam.
  3. Take CASLI's Generalist Knowledge Exam.
  4. Once you pass the Generalist Knowledge Exam...
    • Submit proof of Bachelor's Degree or equivalent as identified in the Alternative Pathways requirements.
    • Once approved, register for CASLI's CDI Performance Exam.
  5. Take CASLI's CDI Performance Exam.
  6. Once you pass the CDI Performance Exam...CONGRATULATIONS! You will receive your RID Certified Deaf Interpreter certification!
  7. Register with PA's Office for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (ODHH) as a Certified Deaf Interpreter!
